Tip: Divide playthroughs across repeat endings
- Dorico makes it easy to set up a repeat structure where each ending segment is to be played more than once.
- With a repeat ending selected, open the Properties panel and enable No. time played, setting the total number of playthroughs.
- Then, in Engrave mode, select each repeat ending segment in turn and use the Times played for segment property to specify how many times each segment should be played, and in which order. Separate playthrough numbers with commas.
Tip: Show page numbers on pages with new flows
- This week’s #TipsTuesday explains how to show page numbers on every page in your Dorico layout, even those that start new flows.
- While publishers often choose to omit page numbers at the start of new movements, they can be useful – for example in songbooks and anthologies.
- The setting can be found in Layout Options, in the Flows section of the Page Setup category.
- Set Page number in header to Show above flow heading.
Tip: Create instrumental cues in orchestral music
- Click the Cues button in the Notations toolbox.
- Click Update to generate a list of potential cues.
- Click a Cue Suggestion to jump to that point in the music.
- Select the range for the cue and click Create Cue, specifying the instrument.
- Switch to the instrumental part to see the cue.
- Drag the handles to change the start and end position of the cue.
- Cues can be displayed using a transpose clef or octave shift, in order to make them easier to read.
- Cues are dynamic, and update when the source is modified.
Tip: The Hand Tool and the Marquee Select Tool
- By default, clicking and dragging across a blank part of a page draws a selection marquee.
- Use the buttons in the Status Bar to switch from the Marquee Select Tool to the Hand Tool.
- Use H to switch between the two tools.
- Hold down Shift to temporarily reverse the behaviour.
- Set your preferred default in Preferences.
Tip: Create a study score layout
- In Setup mode, use the button at the bottom of the Layouts panel to add a new full score layout.
- Rename the layout to distinguish it from your existing full score.
- Open Layout Options, ensuring you are looking at the settings for the correct layout that you have just created.
- On the Page Setup page, select an appropriate page size for your pocket edition; reduce the space size so that the music fits comfortably. You may need to try a few different settings to find the best combination.
- The page and music frame margins can be reduced to remove some of the white space around the edge of the page.
- Enable condensing on the Players page, and include section players where relevant.
- On the Vertical Spacing page, the Staff Visibility section contains the option to hide empty staves, though it is generally a good idea to show all staves on the first page, so the reader can see the full instrumentation for the piece.
- Once your new option settings have been applied, you can view your new layout by selecting it using the popup menu control at the top of the main Dorico window.
