Tip: Show the Tempo Editor in Write mode
- When Link mode is engaged, selecting a tempo item in the score opens the Tempo Editor.
- This allows you to make subtle edits to the playback performance without having to show those edits as tempo markings in the score.
- Select a note to switch back to the Expression and CC lanes.
Tip: Show player names instead of instrument names
- Sometimes you may need to use different staff labels in your score than the default instrument names. For example, you may wish to label a multi-instrument percussion staff simply as ‘Percussion’. Or, in dramatical pieces, you may wish to identify character parts rather than using Soprano, Mezzo-soprano and so on.
- In Setup mode, give your players the names you wish to identify them with in the music.
- In Layout Options, choose Staves and Systems and check the relevant players to show their player names instead of instrument names.
Tip: Customise playback of dynamic markings
- It is possible to edit the playback of dynamic markings.
- The Dynamic Editor is found in the lower zone, as part of the Key Editor.
- The editor shows the profile of dynamic markings using green envelopes.
- Drag the handles to change the intensity and duration of dynamic markings.
- This affects the playback of dynamics.
Tip: Numbered bar regions
-
- Make a selection in an instrumental part and choose Write > Create Numbered Bar Region.
- You can drag the handles at the start and end of the region to edit its position and length.
- There are several Engraving Options to determine the style of numbered bar regions.
Tip: User-defined Project Templates
- Dorico 4 allows you to save any project as a template.
- Add your desired instruments and add any useful flows.
- Set your preferred options, and make changes to styles and page templates.
- You can even apply a playback template.
- Choose File > Save As Project Template, and the template will now be available in the Hub for you to use again and again.
Tip: Multiple lyric words on a single note
-
- Start lyric input by pressing the Lyrics button on the Notations toolbar, or with the key command Shift+L.
- Type Shift+Alt+SPACE to prevent the popover from advancing.
- Use the Lyric text alignment property to left-align the text.
Tip: Undo and redo selections
-
- If, when making a complex selection, you make a mistake, you can undo the latest change and carry on.
- Selections can be both undone and redone.
- This can be extremely useful when making complex or detailed selections and a mistake is made.
Tip: Use sketch instruments when composing or arranging
- Dorico 4 features sketch instruments for composing and arranging.
- In the Hub, choose the Empty project template, setting any desired project options.
- Chose Add Ensemble to add multiple instruments at once.
- There are sketch instruments for woodwind, brass and strings, all of which are grand staff instruments with relevant HSSE sound presets.
- Once you are ready, it is easy to use Dorico’s editing features to fully orchestrate your ideas.
Tip: Paste articulations
- Make a selection of music that contains the articulations you wish to copy.
- Right-click (or open the Edit menu) and choose Copy.
- Select the passage that you wish to paste the articulations to (it can be just the first note). If you make a selection longer than the original music the articulations will repeat, perfect for ostinato passages.
- Right-click and choose Paste > Paste Articulations (you may wish to use the Jump Bar to quickly find the command: press J and start typing Paste Articulations).
- All articulations and slurs in the original selection that was copied will be pasted across the selected music.
